If every person takes on a water conservation mind set, disaster can be averted.
• Only use what you need ~ don’t waste water!
• Toilets are one of the biggest water users. Remember: “If it’s yellow, let it mellow. If it’s brown, flush it down.”
• Turn off urinals that run continuously, especially after hours.
• Replace the shower head with a water-efficient model.
• Shower for 5 minutes or less. Shorten your shower by a minute or two and you’ll save up to 600 litres per month. While showering, collect water in a bucket and use it in your toilet cistern or the garden.
• Take short baths (less than 20 cm).
• Don’t leave the tap on while washing hands or plates, shaving and brushing teeth.
• Try to not water your garden. If really necessary, please water only between 7-9 am and 4-8 pm, preferably with a watering can or bucket.
• Do not wash your car with a hosepipe, rather use a bucket.
• Apply mulch (grass cuttings, bark chips, stones, etc.) to your garden as it can reduce water use by up to 70%.
• Sweep any paving with a broom instead of washing it with water.
• Report water leaks, broken pipes, open hydrants and wasteful sprinklers to your local municipality.
• Repair leaks and dripping taps, but don’t forget to check outdoor taps and hoses for leaks too.
• When washing dishes by hand, don’t let the water run while rinsing. Use a plug.
• When buying new appliances, consider water and energy efficient appliances.
• Re-route your grey water to trees and gardens.
• Install covers on pools and check for leaks around your pumps.
• Share water conservation tips with friends and neighbours.
Remember the three Rs of water conservation:
• Reduce;
• Reuse;
• Repair.
