Smokeless combustion, rocket stove and donkey boiler: three terms that are interlinked and which could, in rural setting, provide a low-cost, sustainable, eco-friendly solution to the provision of heat, hot water, and hot cooked food. There are any number of rocket stoves, rocket heaters and donkey boilers available in South Africa, and likewise plenty of plans and instruction guides on the
internet to help one build one’s own.

Now, however, a Transkei resident, ecowarrior and inventor named Louis Fourie has developed a low cost, efficient and flexible rocket stove that can be supplied with, or retrofitted with, a water heating component.
