The dates for this year’s Walkerville Agricultural Show have been fixed. The show will be a Spring Show and will take place at the Walkerville Agricultural Society’s showground from Friday 6th to Sunday 8th September.
Traditional rural show
The Walkerville show is one of the last “traditional” rural shows with something for anybody with an interest in country living. The show combines agricultural aspects such as livestock and poultry displays as sales with agricultural machinery displays and sales, veterinary, fertilizer, seed, fresh produce, plants and seedlings, delicatessen stalls selling worked meats, dairy products, pickles and preserves, with arts, crafts, bric-a-brac and entertainment.
For children pony rides are offered.
A large sand arena is also used as the venue for displays by various breeds of horses and cattle, as well as displays by working dogs.
Poultry & Rabbits
Traditionally, the show became home to a large stand hosted by the SA Show Poultry Association, where top examples of the many fancy breeds of chicken and quail are on display and available on sale.
Also, the Gauteng Rabbit Breeders’ Association used to hold its annual championship competition at the show, although this year’s event may be affected by the current Rabbit Haemorrhagic Virus Disease pandemic still working its way through lagomorph populations in southern Africa.
Conservancy stand
Traditionally, also, the Walkerville Conservancy runs a well-established stall highlighting its activities to preserve and support the area’s indigenous flora and fauna.
Finally, the “inner man” is well-catered-for, with an al fresco food court comprising a large beer garden under shady trees, and surrounded by food stalls offering a large variety of cuisines. A well-stocked bar is also available for those with a thirst.
